Wynn Resorts Hit With Class Action Lawsuit After Data Breach Exposed 800,000+ Records

Wynn Resorts is facing a class action lawsuit after a data breach exposed the personal information of more than 800,000 people.
A hacking group known as ShinyHunters announced on February 20 that it had stolen records from the casino and resort company. According to reports, the stolen data included names, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth. The group allegedly demanded roughly $1.5 million in bitcoin to keep the data from being released.
Wynn Resorts confirmed the breach in a statement, saying it "immediately activated incident response protocols" and launched an investigation with outside cybersecurity experts. The company says the hackers told them the stolen data has since been deleted, and that it has not seen evidence the information was published or misused.

What's in dispute: Wynn Resorts says only employee data was compromised and that customer information was not affected. However, a class action lawsuit filed on February 21 by a California resident alleges the breach impacted more than 800,000 customers. The complaint accuses Wynn of storing personal data without encryption, failing to implement multi-factor authentication, and providing inadequate breach notification to those affected.
The lawsuit brings seven counts against Wynn Resorts, including negligence, invasion of privacy, breach of fiduciary duty, and unjust enrichment. Plaintiffs are seeking compensatory damages, stronger data security systems, mandatory annual security audits, and continued credit monitoring for all affected individuals.
According to reports, ShinyHunters gained access to Wynn's systems back in September through a vulnerability in Oracle PeopleSoft, a software platform used for HR and payroll management.
Wynn Resorts said it is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection to employees whose information was compromised. No court hearing has been set yet.
There is no settlement in this case yet. If one is reached, affected individuals could be eligible for compensation.
