PlayStation Owners Sue Sony Over PS5 Price Hikes Tied to Overturned Tariffs

Sony is being sued by PlayStation 5 owners who say the company is sitting on a "substantial windfall" from price hikes that were blamed on tariffs that no longer exist.
The lawsuit, Walker et al v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, was filed May 6, 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs Amorey Walker and Bryce Foster-Quarles argue that anyone who bought a PS5 after the August 2025 price hike should get money back.
Here's the timeline. In August 2025, Sony raised the price of the standard PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro by $50 each, citing a "challenging economic environment" tied to tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. In February 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court struck those tariffs down. Then earlier this year, Sony raised prices again — the standard disc edition is now $649.99 and the PS5 Pro hit $899.99 after a $150 jump. All in, between August 2025 and April 2026, the disc and Digital editions went up $150 each, and the Pro went up $200.
The lawsuit alleges Sony is set to receive a "double recovery windfall" — getting tariff refunds from the federal government while continuing to charge customers the higher prices that were justified by those same tariffs. The complaint argues that money should be passed back to the people who actually paid it: consumers.

Who's eligible
The proposed class covers anyone in the U.S. who bought a PlayStation 5 console between August 1, 2025 and the present. That's potentially millions of buyers.
How to file
There's no settlement yet. The case is still in early stages — an initial case management conference is scheduled for August 3, 2026. If the lawsuit succeeds, eligible PS5 owners could receive compensation, but nothing is guaranteed.
This isn't an isolated case. A similar class action was filed against Nintendo last month over tariff-related price increases on Switch accessories.
