Mitsubishi Outlander Hood Settlement: 2022 Owners Could Get Up to $4,595

Mitsubishi has agreed to a class action settlement over claims that certain 2022 Outlander SUVs were built with defective hoods that flutter, bounce, and could potentially open while driving.

The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts federal court back in 2022, alleged that the hood on certain 2022 Outlanders shakes violently at highway speeds — to the point that drivers feared the hood would unlatch and fly up into the windshield. Mitsubishi had previously issued technical service bulletins and replaced hoods under those bulletins, but plaintiffs claimed those repairs didn't actually fix the problem.

Mitsubishi denies any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of a trial.

What you could get

If your 2022 Outlander is covered, the settlement gives you two main benefits:

A free hood replacement at any authorized Mitsubishi dealer, even if your original factory warranty has expired. Mitsubishi is extending the new vehicle limited warranty for 18 months — that coverage started May 1, 2026 — to cover 100% of the cost of a hood replacement.

Reimbursement for out-of-pocket repairs. If you previously paid for hood repairs, replacements, parts, labor, or related rental car costs, you can claim up to $4,595 back with supporting documentation like repair invoices, receipts, or bank statements.

Who's eligible

Current and former owners and lessees of certain 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander vehicles. Not every 2022 Outlander is included — eligibility is based on the VIN. You can check yours through the VIN lookup tool on the official settlement website.

How to file

You have until July 30, 2026 to file your claim. The final approval hearing is scheduled for August 3, 2026, and payments will go out after that hearing once any appeals are resolved.
