Lemon Perfect Sued Over "No Artificial Sweeteners" Claim on Its Flavored Water

Lemon Perfect is being sued over its popular flavored water.
A class action lawsuit filed in California alleges that The Lemon Perfect Company misleads consumers by labeling its beverages "No Artificial Sweeteners" when the drinks actually contain stevia leaf extract — which the lawsuit argues is an artificial sweetener.
Plaintiff Star Ghanaat filed the complaint on January 14, 2026 in California state court, alleging violations of state consumer protection laws and breach of express warranty.

According to the lawsuit, Lemon Perfect prominently displays "No Artificial Sweeteners" on its bottles, giving buyers the impression they're purchasing a premium product free from artificial ingredients. But the complaint argues the stevia leaf extract in Lemon Perfect's drinks isn't the same thing as a crude stevia leaf. Instead, the lawsuit alleges it's a highly purified, chemically processed sweetener — and that crude stevia leaves aren't even approved for use in food in the United States.
Lemon Perfect's own website describes its sweetener as "certified organic stevia leaf extract" and states the product does not contain artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols. The lawsuit disputes that characterization.
This isn't the first time a beverage company has faced legal scrutiny over how it describes its sweeteners. Last year, Abbott Laboratories was hit with a similar lawsuit alleging it misled consumers about its Pedialyte products, which contain the artificial sweetener sucralose. And in 2014, Cargill paid $6.1 million to settle class action claims that its Truvia sweetener — also derived from stevia — was falsely marketed as "natural."
The lawsuit seeks to represent anyone who purchased Lemon Perfect products in California within the applicable statute of limitations. Ghanaat is seeking class certification, damages, fees, costs, and a jury trial.
