Google Play Store Subscription Settlement: How to Know If You're Eligible

google-play-subscription-settlement

Google has agreed to a $5 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging it violated California's automatic renewal law when selling subscriptions through the Google Play Store.

The lawsuit claimed Google failed to properly disclose the full terms of its auto-renewing subscriptions, leading consumers to be billed for recurring charges they didn't fully agree to. Google denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle.

Who qualifies?

You may be eligible if you meet all of the following:

  • You're in California
  • You paid for at least one renewal term of a Google subscription through the Google Play checkout screen between May 30, 2014 and October 27, 2019

  • The subscription was for personal or household purposes

Subscriptions for Google Drive, subscriptions canceled during a free trial, and subscriptions fully refunded by Google are excluded.

How much could you get?

Each eligible class member is estimated to receive about $5.85. It's not life-changing money, but it's yours — and you don't have to do anything to get it.

How will you get paid?

This is the easy part. You don't need to file a claim. If you're eligible, the settlement administrator will use Google's records to find you. Payments will be issued as a Google Play account credit. If you no longer have an active Google Play account, payment will be sent electronically through PayPal or Zelle to the email address on file.

Key dates

You have until May 9, 2026 to opt out if you want to exclude yourself from the settlement. The final approval hearing is scheduled for July 23, 2026, and payments will go out approximately 75 days after final approval and any appeals are resolved.
