Ford Recalls 1.7 Million Vehicles Over Backup Camera Malfunctions

Ford is recalling nearly 1.74 million vehicles in the U.S. after federal regulators flagged software issues that can knock out or scramble the backup camera display.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published two separate recall notices earlier this month covering six Ford and Lincoln models spanning the 2020–2026 model years.

Recall 1 — blank screen: About 849,310 vehicles are affected, including 2021–2026 Ford Broncos and 2021–2024 Ford Edges. In these models, a component inside the infotainment system called the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) can overheat and shut down, causing the backup camera to go completely blank when the vehicle is in reverse.

Recall 2 — flipped image: About 889,950 vehicles are affected, including 2020–2022 Ford Escapes, 2020–2022 Lincoln Corsairs, 2020–2024 Ford Explorers, and 2020–2024 Lincoln Aviators. In these models, a hardware issue with the display's circuit board can cause the entire screen — including the backup camera image — to flip upside down.

Both issues violate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for rear visibility requirements. According to the NHTSA, a malfunctioning backup camera can reduce a driver's view behind the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash. There are no warning signs before these glitches happen, and they typically resolve after restarting the system.

Ford says it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries connected to these issues.

What Ford is doing about it

Ford will fix both issues through free software updates, either over the air (OTA) or at a Ford or Lincoln dealership. The company began mailing notification letters to Bronco and Edge owners on March 30, 2026. Explorer, Escape, Corsair, and Aviator owners will be notified in April.

How to check if your vehicle is affected

You can look up your vehicle by VIN on the NHTSA recall website or Ford's online recall lookup tool. This is a recall, not a settlement — there's no claim to file, but you are entitled to a free repair.
