Cosequin Dog Supplements Paying $11.5 Million Settlement Over Misleading Claims

If you bought Cosequin joint supplements for your dog in California, you could be owed up to $150.

Nutramax Laboratories has agreed to an $11.5 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging the company misrepresented the benefits of its Cosequin dog supplements. The products were marketed with claims like "supports mobility for a healthy lifestyle" and "use Cosequin to help your pet climb stairs, rise and jump." According to the lawsuit, there's no scientific evidence those claims hold up — a study published in the British Medical Journal's VetRecord allegedly found that dogs taking Cosequin showed no significant improvement in mobility, and the active ingredients (glucosamine and chondroitin) had no demonstrated efficacy for dog joint health.

Nutramax has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to avoid further litigation. As part of the deal, the company will also remove the disputed marketing claims from future Cosequin packaging.

Who's eligible

This settlement is for California residents who purchased any of the following Cosequin dog products for personal use between May 3, 2016 and May 6, 2022:

• Cosequin DS Maximum Strength Chewable Tablets
• Cosequin DS Maximum Strength Plus MSM Chewable Tablets

• Cosequin Maximum Strength Plus MSM Chewable Tablets
• Cosequin with MSM Chewable Tablets
• Cosequin DS Maximum Strength Plus MSM Soft Chews
• Cosequin Maximum Strength Plus MSM Soft Chews
• Cosequin with MSM Soft Chews

Cat supplements and products purchased outside California are not covered. One claim per household.

What you could get

Class members can receive up to $25 per unit purchased, with a maximum payout of $150 per household. No proof of purchase is required — you just need to state how many units you bought. If you do have receipts and want to claim more than $50, you'll need to submit them.
