Blue Cross Blue Shield's $2.67 Billion Settlement Is Paying Out in May: Here's What You Need to Know

After more than a decade of litigation, Blue Cross Blue Shield is finally sending out money.

The company reached a $2.67 billion settlement in October 2020 to resolve a class action antitrust lawsuit alleging that BCBS plans agreed not to compete with each other — allegedly keeping health insurance premiums artificially high. A judge gave final approval in 2022, appeals dragged on until 2024, and now payments are finally on the way.

Who's getting paid?

If you were enrolled in a Blue Cross Blue Shield individual or group health insurance plan between February 7, 2008 and October 16, 2020 — and you filed a claim before November 5, 2021 — you're in line for a payout. Self-funded account holders have a slightly different eligibility window: September 1, 2015 through October 16, 2020.

About 6 million people filed claims before the deadline. Payments are expected to average around $333, though the exact amount varies based on how much you paid in premiums and what type of plan you had.

When is the money coming?

The first round of payments is set to begin in May 2026. The settlement administrator started sending claim determination notices — by email and mail — on February 16, 2026. These notices tell you whether your claim was accepted or rejected. If you filed a claim and haven't heard anything yet, check your inbox and your mailbox over the coming weeks. You'll have 30 days from the date of your notice to dispute any premium amounts if something looks off.

Payments are expected to come as mailed checks, digital payments, or prepaid cards depending on what you selected when you filed.

Can I still file?

No. The claim deadline passed on November 5, 2021. If you didn't file by then, you won't receive a monetary payment from this settlement.
