Avis Data Breach Settlement: 300,000 Customers Could Get Up to $5,000

Avis Rent A Car has agreed to a $1.025 million settlement over a 2024 data breach that exposed the personal information of nearly 300,000 customers.
The breach happened between August 3 and August 6, 2024. According to the lawsuit, Avis failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures, and hackers were able to access sensitive customer data — names, driver's license numbers, credit card numbers and expiration dates, dates of birth, and phone numbers. Avis disclosed the breach in September 2024, but the lawsuit alleges the company should have prevented it in the first place.
Avis denies any wrongdoing.
Who's eligible?
Check if you qualify for this settlement
You're eligible if you're a U.S. resident and Avis notified you that your personal information was compromised in the August 2024 breach. If you got a letter or email from Avis about it, that's your sign.
What can you get?
If you experienced out-of-pocket losses because of the breach — fraudulent charges, identity theft costs, credit monitoring fees — you can claim up to $5,000 in reimbursement with documentation. Even if you didn't lose money directly, you can still file for a pro rata cash payment from whatever's left in the settlement fund after expenses and documented claims are paid out.
How do you file?
You have until June 21, 2026 to file your claim. You'll need the unique ID and PIN from the settlement notice Avis sent you.
