23andMe Data Breach Settlement: Claim Up to $10,000 for Stolen DNA Data

December 18, 2025 — 23andMe has agreed to pay up to $50 million to settle a massive class action lawsuit after hackers stole the genetic information, ancestry data, and personal details of nearly 7 million users. If you used 23andMe in 2023 and received a breach notification, you could be owed money.

What Happened

Starting in April 2023, hackers used stolen passwords from other data breaches to break into 23andMe accounts — a technique called credential stuffing. They accessed names, birthdates, ancestry information, family trees, and genetic data for 6.9 million users.

The stolen data showed up for sale on the dark web in August 2023, with hackers specifically targeting users of Ashkenazi Jewish and Chinese heritage. 23andMe didn't publicly confirm the breach until October 2023, and didn't reveal the full scope until December.

The company filed for bankruptcy in March 2025 and was sold in July 2025 for $305 million. The sale increased the settlement fund from $30 million to $50 million.

Who's Eligible

You may be eligible if you meet all three criteria:

  • You were a 23andMe customer between May 1, 2023 and October 1, 2023
  • You lived in the United States during that time
  • You received a notice from 23andMe stating your personal information was compromised

Approximately 6.4 million U.S. residents qualify.

What You Can Claim

The settlement offers several types of compensation:

  • Up to $10,000 for documented extraordinary losses — identity fraud, tax fraud, security system purchases, or mental health treatment directly caused by the breach
  • Up to $165 if your health information was compromised (raw genotype data, health reports, etc.)
  • Approximately $100 automatic payment if you lived in California, Illinois, Oregon, or Alaska during the breach — no proof of damages required
  • Five years of free genetic monitoring services through CyEx, including identity theft protection, dark web monitoring, and genetic anomaly detection (valued at $1,875)

What Happens Next

The final approval hearing is scheduled for January 20, 2026 in bankruptcy court. After approval and any appeals are resolved, payments will be distributed to class members who filed valid claims.

With over 250,000 claims already filed, individual payouts may be reduced if total claims exceed available funds — so file soon.
